The Top Superhero/Comic Book Movies Of 2017

2017 has been a huge year for fans of superhero/comic book movies. There have been a lot of great films released from the genre this year that it's hard to actually rank them into a list.

I've watched what I feel are all of the superhero/comic book movies that were released in 2017 in cinemas.

I apologize in advance if I'm missing a movie that I have yet to see. Also, bear in mind this list is just my personal opinion so don't get too offended about my choices.

9) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2: When the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out in 2014, I loved the movie to death.

It had great action and humor. Not to mention the movie featured Dave Bautista who is one of my favorite WWE wrestlers of all time.

My hopes were high for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, but sadly the sequel didn't hit the right notes for me.

I found the story to be lackluster and the jokes to be far too forced. I did not find the constant "Taserface" joke to be that funny at all.

The thing that makes this movie so low on my list is that the story does not pick up until the 90 minute mark.

Most of the movie the heroes were either bumming around with The Ravagers or just hanging out with Kurt Russell. There wasn't the fast kinetic pace that the first movie had.

8) Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets: Much like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, I felt Valerian also suffered thanks to its story.

Most of the plot was not unveiled until the very end. Criminally, the movie also revealed the true villain pretty early on which killed the suspense of the big reveal at the end.

As for the actors, the best part of this movie is Rihanna.

She has far more charisma than both main stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne put together. If Rihanna were in the movie longer, I would have liked it better.

I liked Dehaan as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but he just didn't feel suitable for the role of Valerian. Cara was a little bit better, but not by much...

7) The LEGO Batman Movie: I'm probably going to get chewed out for putting this so low, but I didn't find this movie to be very funny.

I tried laughing a few times, but overall the humor in this movie didn't appeal to me.

The LEGO Batman Movie is similar to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 as both films felt like they were trying too hard to crack as many jokes as possible.

My sister liked this film even though she's not a Batman fan.

In my opinion, Batman talked way too much and rambled too much. The beat boxing scene also ran for far too long and was not funny in any capacity.

6) Power Rangers: Now we get to the part of the list where I actually like the movies Although Power Rangers is not based on a comic book, it is a superhero film which is why it's on this list.

I was surprised how I enjoyed Power Rangers.

This is all thanks to a great cast that really makes you want to see them to succeed. The movie also knows how to balance its tone between humor and more serious events.

The only reason it's number 6 on the list is because the origin story takes far too long.

The main characters don't suit up until well after the 90 minute mark. It would have been cooler if we saw the actual Power Rangers a little earlier in the film.

5) Justice League: Had Justice League been released in any other year, it would have been higher on my list. I enjoyed Justice League more than Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman and even Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Unlike Power Rangers, the characters actually get into the action far quicker and the humor is also on point. I also loved the fact that Superman got more screen time that I thought he would have.

The only reason this movie isn't higher is because the Danny Elfman score is forgettable and the end battle with the red sky still looks like a CGI mess. That said, the movie is still enjoyable in my opinion.

4) Thor: Ragnarok: Thor: Ragnarok is the movie that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 should have been. Ragnarok is a funny and enjoyable movie that has the right sort of humor that doesn't feel too forced.

This is because Taika Waititi introduces his unique New Zealand type of humor into the film. Waititi's Korg is by far my favorite part of the entire movie thanks to his Maori accent.

I also liked Cate Blanchett's Hela as she is a memorable villain.

The film also has a great supporting cast with Hulk, Valkyrie and Loki all having major roles. Hopefully Mr Waititi is able to direct more MCU movies in the future.

3) Spider-Man: Homecoming: I've been a fan of Spider-Man my entire life and I've always wanted to see the character on the big screen.

Well 2017 is finally the year I got to see my favorite superhero of all time at the cinema.

You are probably thinking I make no sense, but I know what I'm talking about. I hated every other Spider-Man movie to date and yes that includes the entire Tobey Maguire trilogy.

The previous five films didn't feel like a proper Spider-Man movie to me. They were mopey Peter Parker movies instead.

Thankfully, Marvel did what Sony couldn't and released a near perfect Spider-Man movie I had always wanted to see. Tom Holland is excellent and the comedy has a natural feel to it.

The movie also has a great villain with Michael Keaton playing the Vulture. The story is also a little bit different since it's not the usual take over the Earth plot line.

The only thing I would have changed in this movie was Flash Thompson but that's about it. The rest of the movie is awesome!

2) Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman is just a downright awesome movie. I was scared Gal Gadot wasn't able to pull off a convincing Wonder Woman, but she proved me wrong.

The reason this movie is so high is thanks to the chemistry Gal Gadot has with Chris Pine. It was very funny to see Wonder Woman trying to fit in with the real world.

The movie is also inspiring and uplifting much like the first two Superman films starring Christopher Reeve.

The only reason this movie isn't in the number one spot is due to the end boss fight. Wonder Woman's fight with Ares felt like a mess like the Doomsday encounter in Batman v Superman...

1) Logan: Wolverine has never been a favorite character of mine, and I was never a big fan of the X-Men movies too.

However, Logan is the best comic book movie of 2017 because it's a personal story that will make you tear up at the end.

Logan pretty much has a similar storyline as The Last of Us video game, but it stars X-Men characters instead.

The movie also gets the top spot because it didn't have a cliched storyline and didn't force itself to add too much unwanted humor.

Logan may not usurp The Dark Knight (2008) to be the best comic book movie of all time, but it's one of the best to ever be released. Hopefully 2018 also brings us even more great comic book movies!
