You have seen the name under poetry, on articles, on forums and around the web many times, but who is Gary R. Hess?
Well, I’ll tell you. Gary is a poet, an artist and (amongst many other things) a web designer and developer.
I have been writing poetry for about four years now. It all started when I was in high school. I wrote mainly about love and depression but have formed into a broader range of subjects through the years. I am a student of word and I love my teacher. The more I read the more I want to write. The more I write the more I want to read. I have also published my first poetry book (well… self published) you may read more about it here: Rhythm Speaks.
I have also fell in love with photography after I bought a digital camera. I love it and never let it out of my site. You can see much of my collection of photos here: Eye of Design: Photography.
As for the other arts which I love, you may view on the same site as photography.
I am also a sports enthusiast. I love all sports in Kansas City along with USA sports nationally. FIFA? Oh hell yes. I love soccer (football)… I just hate the MLS (I think it might be rigged… Adu not playing? WTF?)
The Royals… oh yes. Love the boys in blue and I can’t wait until they get back on track. The Royals are my love… I follow them all year round.
The Chiefs? Love them too. However, not as much as the Royals anymore. The excitement just isn’t there for me anymore and I can’t explain why. Football just doesn’t excite me as much as it use to. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing better than a Sunday afternoon or Monday night watching a game on the Tellie. Best thing in the world.
If you ever have anymore questions about me, feel free to comment and ask. I’m an open book ready for reading!

Hi Gary,
In a freshmen student and in my english class we are doing a project about poetry right now and i pick one of your poem that is called “Waiting For The Kiss”. I read the poem, but i can’t figure it out what is it about. it would be great if u can give me some contextual information about the poem. it would really help me with my project! Thank You
Danai, I would have emailed this to you, however you didn’t leave an email address; here goes anyways:
Many poets subscribe to the theory that leaving a poem as is, is the way to go. We like to make the reader think about what it means. Each and every poem has its own life, giving a different meaning to each reader who crosses its path. For one person ‘Waiting For The Kiss’ might mean its about never knowing someone, but still knowing that perfect someone is out there - somewhere. To a different person, it could mean it’s about a long distance relationship. Being far away from each other, but still in love - an internet relationship if you will. And as another, it might be about someone you once loved as a child, but never had the chance to tell, and have not met since, but you still hope it happens. Even to others it might not even be about a kiss, but about something totally unrelated and just a metaphore for something else, something greater.
This is what makes poetry so great; not only the variety of the writing styles or the many metaphores, similes, meter style or all the other great aptitudes available to both the writer and reader. This is why I love poetry. It is what it is, but isn’t.
- Woops, just saw you actually did leave your email address in the admin panel. I’ll email this to you, but leave this here so others will be able to find it if need be.
hi.. im doing an english honors assignment thats partially about contemporary poets. i chose your poem, “Love?” to analyze for the assignment. i wanted to know why you wrote this particular poem and also i wanted to learn more information about yourself such as date of birth and city, for a small biography included in my assignment. Please respond before June 1. I would greatly appreciate it.
Again, I am glad someone found interest in my writing. I really enjoy being able to express my thoughts and feelings through words, even if not everyone enjoys it. Some information about me:
Born: In 1984 at a small town in southeast Kansas. The name of the ‘city’ is Iola. It is an extremely small but friendly community, probably a little too friendly and a little too small however.
I won’t be able to tell you the exact true meaning of the poem, as I like to leave that as much as possible up to the reader without making the poem seem meaningless. However, as the placement within the website shows, I wrote it after a breakup. Like all breakups, it hurt right away but soon after thinking about the situation it wasn’t all that bad. I wasn’t planning on it, and neither was she, but the past relationship seemed as if it was a ‘pickmeup’ towards our overall beings. We were both down in the dumps about relationships we have had in the past, so we needed something to freshen our souls and get us back on track. I suppose that’s why we found each other. We all have had someone like this before, being it planned or not, and this was the breakup that finished off this type of relationship.

As I told other people, please do a bit of thinking and write what you think it is about or the background it could come from. Besides, it isn’t like you can ask William Shakespeare the background of Romeo and Juliet (although, it is quite obvious what it is).
Hello Gary,
First I would just like to say I love your style of poetry, I can relate to your topics and subjects so well and I hope you still write often.
I am in grade nine english and I am doing a summative for my poetry unit, and we were asked to find poems to a theme and write short biographys on the authors. My theme is Broken Hearts, and I was wondering if you suggest any of your favourite works regarding this theme?
By the way - Do you mean Royals as in The Reading Royals in the Premier league? If you do, you are officially my absolute hero. haha.
Thank you for reading this (if you do haha…)
-katie

Hello Gary !
I am working on an english literature project and i was wondering if i could choose one of your poetry, “Just Friends” for it. It would be a great help if you could provide me with the context with the poem-how and when the literary work was written so that it could be somewhat a introduction to the poem.( just 3-4 sentences will do)
It would be great if you could help me . Thanks in advance ! haha
