The First Cut Of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Was Over Three Hours Long

In the movie industry, it's common for directors to film a lot of footage until it gets edited down for the final release.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi had an even longer cut originally, but this has been cut down for its theatrical release.

Collider had a chance to interview director Rian Johnson about Star Wars: The Last Jedi recently.

The director revealed the first cut was very long, but he managed to shave it down to 2 and a half hours long. You can read his comments down below.

We had a long movie from the start. It was well over three hours, the first cut... It's much better at two and a half [hours] than it was at over three, but it was a cut I had put together, is where we started. And it was over three hours.

Aside from Titanic and the Lord of the Rings movies, big studios usually like it when movies are under 3 hours long to maximize their success at the Box Office.

The shorter a film is, the more sessions a cinema can show a movie per day.

Johnson further confirmed there won't be a "director's cut" of the film, but we will get to see many of the deleted scenes for the home release of The Last Jedi.

That said, Johnson said the theatrical release of the film is his favorite cut of the movie.

Despite being 150 minutes long, The Last Jedi will still be the longest Star Wars movie ever made.

The length is unlikely to affect the movie's potential at the Box Office as it's still expected to be the highest grossing movie of 2017.
